Common Mistakes to Avoid in a Marriage Biodata

A marriage biodata is a first impression, and small mistakes can distract from everything good in it. The good news is that most problems are easy to avoid once you know what to look for. Here are the most common mistakes, along with a simple fix for each.

1. Typos in names, dates and numbers

A misspelt name or a wrong digit in a phone number is the most common and the most costly error. Read the biodata aloud, check every number against your records, and ask a second person to read it. Fresh eyes spot mistakes that you stop seeing after the third read.

2. An old or blurry photo

A photo from several years ago, or one that is dark or heavily filtered, makes people wonder what the real you looks like. Use a recent picture in good light, with a natural expression, and crop it neatly. One good photo is better than three poor ones.

3. Too many pages or a crowded page

When every line is packed in, nothing stands out. Aim for one A4 page with space around the sections. If you have too much to say, keep the most important details and save the rest for conversation.

4. No reachable contact

A biodata without a working phone number leads nowhere. Add the name and number of a family member who actually answers calls, and mention a good time to call. Check the number twice.

5. Inconsistent formatting

Mixing date styles, fonts or capitalisation makes the page look careless. Choose one style, for example 12 May 1996 for dates and Title Case for headings, and apply it everywhere. A ready-made layout helps because it keeps the formatting consistent for you.

6. Boasting or long expectation lists

Phrases such as the most caring and talented person you will ever meet read as hollow. Describe yourself plainly instead. Likewise, a long list of demands for the partner can discourage families, so keep expectations short and respectful.

7. Sharing too much private information

Identity numbers, bank details and exact salary slips do not belong in a biodata, which may be forwarded to many people. Share your full address only when you feel comfortable, and never post the file in open groups.

8. Hard-to-read fonts and colours

Tiny, ornate fonts or pale text on a patterned background are difficult to read, especially on a phone. Choose clear type and strong contrast. If you cannot read it comfortably at arm's length on a printout, make it larger.

9. Sending the wrong file format

Editable files can shift when opened on a different phone or computer, so fonts and photos move around. A PDF looks the same everywhere, which is why it is the best format for sharing.

10. Not checking it on a phone

Most people will open your biodata on a small screen. Before you send it, open the file on your own phone and make sure the text is readable and the photo is clear.

A quick pre-send checklist

Running through these five points takes less than two minutes and prevents nearly every problem described above. Make it a habit before you send the file to anyone, even when you are in a hurry.
